What to Expect From Post-Op Lymphatic Drainage Massage

A practical guide for clients recovering from cosmetic or other procedures in St. Cloud and the surrounding Central Florida area

If you are recovering from surgery, you may have been told to consider lymphatic drainage massage. But many clients arrive with the same questions:

Will it hurt? When can I start? What happens during the first session? And how many sessions will I need?

At L W Med Spa Massage in St. Cloud, we believe post-operative care should begin with understanding your individual situation rather than following the same routine for every client.

What Is Post-Op Lymphatic Drainage?

Post-op lymphatic drainage is a gentle, specialized massage approach intended to support lymphatic movement during recovery.

After a procedure, swelling, tenderness, tightness, and changes in how the tissues feel can occur. Lymphatic drainage uses light, controlled movements rather than the heavy pressure commonly associated with deep tissue massage.

The goal is not to make the massage as strong as possible. During recovery, more pressure does not necessarily mean better care.

What Happens During Your First Visit?

Your first session should not begin with massage immediately.

Before treatment, we want to understand:

  • What procedure did you have?

  • When was your surgery?

  • Where are you experiencing swelling, tightness, or discomfort?

  • What instructions did your surgeon or medical provider give you?

  • Are there areas that should not be touched?

  • How is your body feeling today?

This information helps us determine whether lymphatic drainage is appropriate and how the session should be adapted to you.

Every recovery is different. Two clients who had similar procedures may have very different needs.

Does Lymphatic Drainage Hurt?

Many first-time clients worry that post-op massage will be painful.

Lymphatic drainage is generally performed with gentle, rhythmic movements. It is different from deep tissue or therapeutic massage, where stronger pressure may sometimes be appropriate.

If an area is particularly sensitive, the technique and pressure can be adjusted.

A post-operative session should never become a contest to see how much discomfort you can tolerate.

When Should I Start After Surgery?

There is no single starting date that is appropriate for every person or every procedure.

Your surgeon or medical provider's instructions should always come first.

The appropriate timing can depend on your procedure, healing progress, complications, incisions, drains, and other individual factors.

If your provider has given you specific post-operative instructions, please bring or share them with your massage therapist.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

There is no responsible way to promise the same number of sessions to every client.

Some people may choose only a few sessions. Others may receive lymphatic drainage over a longer period depending on their recovery and their provider's recommendations.

Rather than automatically recommending a large package, we prefer to evaluate how you are progressing and discuss an appropriate plan with you.

What Should I Wear?

Wear something comfortable and easy to change in and out of.

Depending on the area being treated and your stage of recovery, your therapist can explain what clothing or garments need to be adjusted while maintaining appropriate draping and privacy.

If you are using a compression garment following your procedure, you may bring it with you.

What Should I Tell My Therapist?

Please tell your therapist about anything that has changed since your procedure, especially new or worsening symptoms.

Massage therapy is not a substitute for medical evaluation. If you have symptoms that concern you or your surgeon has told you to seek medical care, contact the appropriate medical professional rather than waiting for a massage appointment.

Your safety comes before completing a session.

Why Personalized Post-Op Care Matters

Post-operative recovery is not a standard massage appointment.

We pay attention to how your tissues feel, which areas are sensitive, how your body responds to gentle techniques, and how your needs change throughout recovery.

Our goal is to provide thoughtful, individualized care while staying within the appropriate scope of massage therapy.
